30 Great Small Colleges for ESTJ Personality Types

By Kristen Fescoe
Published November, 2015

The Myers Briggs Type Indicator Test (MBTI) is a commonly administered, highly reliable test meant to classify people into personality types such as the ESTJ. There are a variety of potential uses for this measure, including psychological evaluations, employee screenings, background checks and several more. The Myers Briggs is a “personality inventory” test based in the theories of psychologist Carl Jung. According to his theories, there are many nuances to behavior that underlie the way that people think, act and perceive the world. The MBTI uses a series of questions to determine your tendencies in four unique areas of measurement. These include:

Favorite world: Do you favor the outer world or your own inner world? This is called Extraversion (E) or Introversion (I).

Information: Do you prefer the basic information you take in or do you prefer to interpret and add meaning? This is called Sensing (S) or Intuition (N).

Decisions: When making decisions, do you look first at logic and consistency or at the people and special circumstances? This is called Thinking (T) or Feeling (F).

Structure: When encountering the outside world, do you prefer to have decisions made or stay open to new information and options? This is called Judging (J) or Perceiving (P).

These four measures then determine your Personality Type, which is expressed as a code with four letters. There are 16 personality types that make up the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator “type table,” each with its very unique set of characteristics, preferences and strengths. There are four groupings of personality types labeled Analysts, Diplomats, Sentinels and Explorers.

ESTJ Personality Types

The ESTJ Personality is referred to as “the Executive” and is considered a Sentinel. These are people who find comfort in tradition and order and use their sense of right and wrong (as well as what is socially acceptable) to bring communities and families together.

Some of their best attributes include natural leadership abilities, dedication, directness, honesty, loyalty, patience, reliability and excellent organizational skills. There have been a number of ESTJ presidents over the years. They are people who may be inflexible at times and can be overly judgmental. Sometimes they are seen as too focused on social status and they can have difficulty expressing their emotion. An ESTJ is often valued for providing clear, succinct advice and guidance to those around them. Some of the careers for ESTJ learners are military leaders, business administrators, police officers, detectives, judges, teachers and school administrators.

Best Majors for the ESTJ Personality

Each of the Myers Briggs Personality types has a number of career options that are best suited for their specific personality characteristics. ESTJs have a profound respect for tradition and stability. They function best when their environment has order and functions smoothly. They thrive in a more contained environment where they can lead others towards what is right. In this vain, some of the most ideal majors for ESTJ learners are law, business administration, political science, law enforcement, criminology, education and military leadership.

Qualities of the Best Colleges for the ESTJ Personality

For each of the unique Myers Briggs personalities, there is a learning environment that will most ideally allow them to use their individual strengths and interests. An ESTJ will strongly benefit from a learning environment that provides stability and order. A smaller learning environment with rich tradition and history is ideal so they have ample opportunities to put their leadership skills to work. Finding a college that allows them to continue their quest for what is right and just will be important to all ESTJ learners. Many ESTJ personality types will pursue a military career, so for those students who completed their military service before earning a college degree it is important to find a school that best supports the needs of veterans returning to college. It is also important for the ESTJ to find a school where they can pursue a career in education, military leadership, law enforcement, political science, criminology or business administration.

Methodology

This list outlines 30 small colleges that provide the kind of environment that will strongly suit the ESTJ personality. In order to be considered, each school must have undergraduate enrollment of less than 15,000 students. While some larger schools may offer a number of ESTJ majors, the best learning environment for this Myers Briggs Personality type is a small, more engaged academic environment. Tuition information and accreditation information was gathered from the National Center for Educational Statistics College Navigator Tool. Enrollment, top majors and campus setting data was collected from US News and World Report. Data relevant to each school was gathered from the school’s website as listed. The pool of possible schools began with over two hundred of the country’s best nationally ranked programs for ESTJ majors. This data was gathered from US News and World Report as well as the lists of the top programs in Business Administration, Education, Political Science, Law and Law Enforcement.
